About the role
Canonical is looking for a System Software Engineer to lead the development and integration of GCC and LLVM compilers, runtimes and tooling on Ubuntu. You will help ensure that the latest C and C++ language innovations are available to Ubuntu users across cloud, data‑center and edge environments.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain GCC and LLVM toolchains for Ubuntu.
- Integrate compilers and runtimes into the Ubuntu ecosystem, covering desktop, server and container workloads.
- Collaborate with upstream open‑source communities to incorporate new language features and optimisations.
- Mentor junior engineers, conduct code and design reviews, and contribute to architectural decisions.
- Provide technical guidance to internal teams and external partners on compiler usage and best practices.
Required profile
- Strong passion for compilers, runtimes and modern C/C++ development.
- Deep understanding of Linux distributions and software architecture.
- Experience contributing to open‑source projects, preferably in the compiler space.
- Ability to work independently in a globally distributed team.
