Engineering Manager - Distributed Systems, Python / Go

About the role

Canonical is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead its Distributed Systems Testing team. The role combines strong software engineering judgment with people leadership to deliver high‑quality testing infrastructure for cloud‑native and distributed solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop a high‑performing team of software and quality engineers across seniority levels.
• Shape technical strategy, architecture and roadmap together with senior engineers.
• Guide the development of automated testing infrastructure for reliability, interoperability and resilience of distributed systems.
• Improve CI pipelines, testing tools and reporting across bare‑metal, private and public cloud environments.
• Enable engineering teams to adopt effective distributed‑systems testing practices and tooling.
• Contribute through design reviews, debugging and hands‑on engineering when needed.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic track record and experience leading software engineers.
• Professional software engineering experience with Python or Go.
• Expertise in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure or quality engineering.
• Strong knowledge of modern software testing processes and automation.
• Experience with Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) and agile development environments.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
• Willingness to travel twice a year for company events.
