Database Engineer (YugabyteDB) – Remote

About the role

We are looking for a Database Engineer (DBE) to provide L3/L4 support for YugabyteDB clusters in our remote‑first, open‑source support team. The role focuses on troubleshooting, performance tuning, and architecture guidance for large‑scale distributed SQL systems used by mission‑critical customers.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose and resolve complex production issues in YugabyteDB and other distributed SQL/OLTP databases, including transaction contention, query regressions, tablet hotspots, replication lag, and compaction stalls.
• Optimize performance by tuning queries, schemas, sharding, indexing, connection pooling and configuration settings using EXPLAIN ANALYZE on the YSQL (PostgreSQL‑compatible) layer.
• Collaborate with Solution Architects to design data models, primary‑key and sharding strategies, indexing plans, and HA/DR solutions such as synchronous replication, xCluster asynchronous replication, read replicas and geo‑distributed deployments.
• Participate in 24/7 on‑call rotations, act as escalation point for incidents, and ensure rapid root‑cause analysis and remediation.
• Apply, validate and test security patches (CVE remediation) in customer environments.
• Document best practices, create playbooks and mentor junior engineers.

Required profile

• Strong background in distributed SQL databases and deep understanding of YugabyteDB internals.
• Experience with PostgreSQL‑compatible query layers (YSQL) and advanced query optimization.
• Comfortable working under SLA pressure and participating in on‑call rotations.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to customers and internal teams.
