OpenMined
Job description
About the role
OpenMined is a 501(c)(3) non-profit building open-source infrastructure for federated AI. Its AI Oversight team builds privacy-preserving infrastructure so independent evaluators can run evaluations on frontier AI models without exposing the models or private data. As a Senior Software Engineer you will work closely with the Technical Lead Manager for AI Oversight, build core parts of the system and its products, and help deploy the software in partner environments. This is an independent contractor engagement, roughly full-time, with an initial 12-month term expected to be renewed; you set your own schedule, with working hours overlapping US Eastern business hours.

- Build and strengthen secure enclave (TEE) solutions
- Extend PySyft, the open-source library, including workers and verified receipts
- Deploy and support the software in partner environments (frontier labs, evaluators, governments) and make deployments reliable
- Move the product from one production deployment to several, improving reliability, scale and user experience
- Write clean, tested, readable code and review teammates' work
- Turn ambiguous requirements into clear designs and explain trade-offs to engineers and non-engineers
- Use AI coding tools to move fast while keeping quality high
Required profile
- 5+ years of professional engineering experience with strong Python skills
- Hands-on coding: writing clean, reliable, readable and well-tested code every day
- Strong understanding of software architecture, systems design and engineering trade-offs
- Full-stack experience on at least one project (backend, data, frontend, deployment)
- CI/CD, debugging complex systems and cloud infrastructure experience
- Ability to quickly understand unfamiliar concepts and give/receive constructive feedback on a small, fully remote team
- Preferred: TEEs, confidential computing, distributed systems, Terraform, Kubernetes, AWS or Google Cloud, AI safety or privacy-enhancing technologies, open-source contributions, startup experience
Required skills
- Python
- PySyft
- CI/CD and cloud infrastructure
- Preferred: Rust, Go or C++ for performance-critical work
What we offer
- Contract fee of $77,000 - $109,000 USD annualized, invoiced monthly
- Mission-driven work in a 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on social impact
- Contribution to an open-source project
- Flexible, fully remote work with flexible hours
