Senior Controller – Real Estate & Development

About the role

Howard Financial is seeking a Senior Controller to lead accounting and financial reporting for a portfolio of US‑based real‑estate and development clients. The role combines client ownership with team leadership, ensuring high‑quality deliverables while driving process improvements.

Key responsibilities

• Own month‑end close, financial statements and reporting for multiple client engagements, meeting Howard’s standards and deadlines.
• Serve as the senior point of contact for clients, leading meetings, presenting results and anticipating needs.
• Lead, coach and review the work of accountants and senior accountants, assigning tasks and holding the team accountable.
• Review reconciliations, journal entries, workpapers and financial statements for accuracy and defensibility.
• Apply US GAAP to complex transactions and determine appropriate accounting treatment.
• Identify process gaps and implement faster, more consistent workflows across the portfolio.

Required profile

• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller or Senior Controller roles.
• Proven ability to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously, preferably in public accounting or an outsourced firm.
• Experience leading and developing accounting teams.
• Strong command of US GAAP, month‑end close and financial statement preparation.
• Excellent written and spoken English with confidence to lead client conversations.
